What is Reefer Container

A refrigerated container, or reefer, is designed to transport temperature-sensitive cargo at precise temperatures. Built to work as a large refrigerator, this container type can usually maintain any temperature between -30°C and +30°C.

Benefits of Reefer Container

Versatility

Another advantage to refrigerated cargo shipping is that reefer containers can transport a wide variety of temperature-sensitive cargo, including frozen, chilled, and even heated goods. This versatility makes them suitable for a diverse range of industries, from food and medicine to chemicals and electronics.

01

Global Reach

Reefer containers also enable the extension of supply chains as products can be sourced from more diverse locations. This helps to diversify markets and reduce supply chain risks. Using refrigerated shipping containers, businesses can access new markets and reach consumers in regions that were previously out of reach. For those in agriculture and seafood, this can be a game-changer.

02

Cost-Effective

While refrigerated transport comes at a higher cost than traditional dry cargo shipping, it's a cost-effective solution for maintaining product quality and reducing waste. By preserving freshness, reefer shipping containers enable the consumption of fresh produce that might otherwise go to waste due to limited local demand. Despite the additional expenses, the benefits of a longer shelf life are unparalleled.

03

Environmental Impact

Modern refrigerated shipping containers are designed with energy efficiency in mind. They use advanced insulation and cooling technology, reducing energy consumption and minimising their environmental footprint.

04

Reliability

Reefer containers are also equipped with sophisticated monitoring systems. If conditions deviate from the desired range, alarms and alerts are triggered, which helps to ensure the integrity of your fresh cargo while onboard.

05

What Is a Reefer Container Used for

Fruits and Vegetables
Reefer containers remain the preferred mode of transporting fresh produce worldwide, as they are incredibly effective at keeping produce fresh.

Meat and Poultry
Refrigerated units can keep meat at -18° F or below as they circulate temperature-controlled air. The airlocked cold tunnel keeps poultry and meat fresh for extended periods.

Medicines
Reefers can help transport essential medicines across continents without letting the external weather adversely affect their potency.

Disaster Relief and Healthcare
Reefers allow aid workers to deliver food, medications, and equipment to disaster sites in top condition and assist in prompt relief and rehabilitation during emergency medical situations.

The versatility of reefer containers

Fruits and vegetables

Fresh produce like bananas, strawberries, and avocados can be transported across the globe while maintaining their freshness.

Meat and seafood

Reefer containers keep meat, poultry, and seafood products at the required low temperatures to prevent spoilage. This is especially crucial in the sushi business.

Dairy products

Milk, cheese, and yogurt can be safely transported without compromising their quality.

Pharmaceuticals

Temperature-sensitive drugs and vaccines rely on reefer containers to maintain their potency throughout their journey and storage.

Chemicals

Some chemicals and industrial products require precise temperature and humidity control to maintain their integrity during transportation.

Product endurance testing

In its storage state, reefer containers can help develop and test products that need to withstand certain temperatures.

Components of a reefer shipping container

01/

Interior fans: Interior fans are installed inside the refrigerated container and help spread air to promote adequate temperature control and stability.

02/

Control unit: The control unit sets and adjusts the internal climate of the reefer container, including the temperature, alarm conditions, and in some cases, ventilation and humidity levels.

03/

Fresh air vent: The fresh air vent hole lets air enter from outside, and any gases from the container, such as fruit-ripening ethylene gas, can leave.

04/

Voltage transformers: Dual voltage transformers are also an option with some containers, allowing operation on voltages down to 200V.

05/

Unit evaporator: Excess moisture in a reefer can harm products, quicken food spoilage and break down packaging, leaving contents vulnerable. The unit evaporator helps preserve the humidity inside the container. The reefer unit evaporator can either heat or cool the air that circulates past it from the fan. Heating capacity is using either hot gas heat or electrical heating elements.

06/

Condenser: Air-cooled models pull cooled air from the top of the container and discharge it under the cargo, pushing the air to the back doors before it convects naturally and rises, flowing back over the load to the return air inlet on the reefer unit. Because air moves under the cargo, proper loading and covering as much of the floor as possible is critical to prevent a “chimney” effect and short cycling.

Types of refrigerated shipping containers

Standard refrigerated container:
These are the most commonly used reefer containers and are available in 20-feet and 40-feet lengths. They can maintain a temperature range of -30°C to +30°C and are ideal for transporting perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and meat.

High-cube refrigerated container:
These containers are similar to standard refrigerated containers but are taller, with an additional foot of height. They are available in 40-feet lengths and can maintain a temperature range of -30°C to +30°C. They are suitable for transporting bulky or tall items such as pallets of goods or large equipment.

Open top refrigerated container:
These containers have an open top, allowing for the easy loading and unloading of cargo. They can maintain a temperature range of -25°C to +25°C and are ideal for transporting items that are difficult to load into standard containers, such as machinery or oversized cargo.

Flat rack refrigerated container:
These containers have collapsible sides and can be loaded from the top or the sides. They are available in 20-feet and 40-feet lengths and can maintain a temperature range of -30°C to +30°C. They are suitable for transporting oversized or irregularly shaped cargo such as machinery or vehicles.

Insulated container:
These containers are designed to maintain a consistent temperature range without the need for a refrigeration unit. They are ideal for transporting goods that need to be kept at a specific temperature range, such as electronics or chemicals.

Dual-temperature container:
The refrigerated container has two separate compartments with different temperature settings, allowing for the transportation of goods that require different temperature ranges. The refrigerated shipping container is ideal for transporting goods such as frozen foods and fresh produce in the same container.

Controlled atmosphere container:
These containers can control the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and humidity inside the container to extend the shelf life of perishable goods. They are ideal for transporting fruits, vegetables, and other produce.

How does a reefer container work

Reefer cooling by air

The generator, placed on one side of the container, blows air into the container. In most cases the air is blown in through the floor or side of the container. The floor of a reefer container is usually a T-style floor. T-flooring lets the air flow through the floor and cool the cargo from the bottom up. You can see the T-style floor on the picture below.

After loading, the generator can be set to the right temperature and the container will take care of itself from there on. The internal temperature can be maintained, even if the outside temperature suddenly increases or decreases. While a reefer shipping container is excellent at maintaining the temperature of its content, it is important to remember that a reefer cannot be used to reach the desired temperature. In other words: the cargo of a reefer container has to be brought to the desired temperature prior to loading.

Reefer cooling by water

Some reefers are provided with a cooling system that uses water to cool the cargo. When a reefer container is stored below deck on a cargo vessel, or sometimes even when multiple containers are stacked together in a tight space, the water cooling system is used to ventilate the generated heat outside of the container and even the space it’s being stored. However, because of the high price of a water cooling system, these type of reefer containers are declining in popularity.

What Is the Buying Process for a Refrigerated Container

1. Evaluate Your Needs
When buying a container, assess your business needs and the challenge you want to solve with the reefer. This consideration helps you know which type or size of reefer to purchase and whether to choose the standard alternatives or build a custom unit. While there are industry standards you may need to follow, learning more about the specific products you deal with is essential to make the correct decision, too.

2. Consider Your Budget
The prices of reefers depend on factors such as the dimensions, functions and the location of purchase. After evaluating your business needs, make a list of the required functions and request a quote from a manufacturer. It also helps to seek professional advice to be sure the budget available can build the refrigerated container you need for that particular job. Also keep in mind that if you do spend more on a system with great capabilities such as dual-redundancy or integral power, you may ultimately save more in the long run by avoiding product loss and temperature excursions.

3. Assess the Specifications
Consider the product temperature range, container size, power requirements and other special features like sensors and trackers to keep your products safe. The reefer container you purchase should accommodate the number of products you regularly transport and protect them throughout the journey.

4. Locate a Trusted Supplier
Locating a reliable manufacturer is crucial. Conduct thorough research online, consult experts in the field and ask colleagues to identify who can deliver quality products that meet your business’s needs and increase your return on investment. It is important also that you understand how spare parts and service for the equipment will be provided around the globe as some manufacturers only have regional support for their equipment. If you are buying through a reseller, make sure that the equipment being ordered will be able to be supported for many years into the future.

5. Contact the Seller and Make the Purchase
Contact your chosen supplier and inquire about the type of reefer you need. Ask questions about the unique specifications and features you can add for optimum performance and arrange the contract.make arrangements for delivery, logistics and installation.

FAQ

Q: What is a reefer container?

A: Reefer container is short for the refrigerated container, also abbreviated as RF container. A refrigerated container is a shipping container that remains its cargo at a regulated, cool temperature. A reefer usually works at a temperature range of -30°C and +30°C and handles frozen, chilled, or cold goods.

Q: What is the difference between a reefer container and a normal container?

A: The main difference between reefer containers and dry shipping containers relates to the cooling capacity. Reefer containers equipped with cooling systems can reach and maintain very low temperatures (down to -35 ͦC) and can safely hold frozen goods.

Q: What is the purpose of a reefer ship?

A: A reefer ship is a refrigerated cargo ship typically used to transport perishable cargo, which require temperature-controlled handling, such as fruits, meat, vegetables, dairy products, and similar items.

Q: Which gas is used in reefer containers?

A: Dry Ice or Liquid Nitrogen is used for these containers for cooling. The cryogenically frozen gas evaporates slowly, cools the container, and is then vented out. The average time period for which these containers can maintain their temperature range between 17 days to 30 days.

Q: What is the temperature of a reefer?

A: A typical reefer truck has a refrigeration unit that keeps the cargo at within a range of about -13 degrees to 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q: What is the working principle of reefer container?

A: As the air warms up, it rises and gets drawn back to the front of the reefer where it is then cooled again by the refrigeration unit and the process is repeated. It makes sense to re-chill the air inside the container – it will usually be closer to the desired temperature than the air outside the container.

Q: What is ventilation in reefer container?

A: Ventilation essentially refers to the replacing of air inside a container with air from the outside surrounding environment. For the most part, the fresh air intake capacity of most reefer containers varies between 0 and 180 m3/hour (50 Hz).

Q: How to power a reefer container?

A: When a reefer is kept at a terminal, it must be plugged into a specialised electrical power outlet of 32 amperes and 380/440 volts. To provide power, terminals install what is known as reefer plugs (sockets) within their yards, which are combined into outlets supplying several reefers.

Q: What is the humidity in a reefer?

A: A reefer unit has a dehumidification function which can lower the level of moisture in the air. Although some newer units can reach 50%, the standard is between 60% and 85 % relative humidity (RH). Drains: These are used to release excess water that may accumulate inside the containers.

Q: What is the fire rating of a container?

A: Offshore containers' fire ratings – such as A0, A60, H0, H60, and H120 – are classifications that indicate a container's ability to withstand fire. It's important to understand that the differentiation between “A” and “H” ratings pertains to the specific types of fires they are designed to withstand.

Q: How many cross members are in a container?

A: The load-carrying element of all box containers is a steel framework, consisting of four corner posts and two bottom side rails, two top side rails, two bottom cross members, a front top end rail and a door header. Bottom cross members serve as supports for the container floor.

Q: Who is responsible for loading a container?

A: Your supplier is responsible for loading the container “shipper's load, stow, and count.” “Shipper's load, stow, and count” means that the supplier is responsible for loading the container, the number of cartons in the container, and the securement of the cartons.

Q: Do shipping containers need ventilation?

A: Odor Control: Storing certain paints or chemicals in a shipping container may emit strong odors or fumes that can become trapped inside the container. Proper ventilation is essential to prevent the buildup of potentially dangerous fumes and odors inside the container.

Q: Can a container be transported by air?

A: Not all containers can be shipped by air. Air containers are special containers which are compatible with various aircraft types.

Q: How many doors are on a shipping container?

A: Shipping containers are available in many sizes and varying container conditions. They come standard with double doors on one end of the container. However, there are various entry door options/configurations available as well.

Q: Do full shipping containers float?

A: A container will float if the weight of the air inside and the contents it carries is less than the weight of the water it displaces. If the weight is greater, the container will sink.

Q: What is the basic rule when loading a container?

A: The main principle of container loading can be summarised as one rule—heavier cargo must always be at the bottom, and distributed evenly. This rule ensures that the container isn't disproportionally heavy on any side.

Q: Do shipping containers have AC?

A: Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning options are available for your container as well. Depending on the size of the area you wish to control and the temperature requirement, we have many options for you to choose from.

Q: Are ship containers waterproof?

A: In many cases, the answer is yes. Most new shipping containers are manufactured with durable rubber seals around their doors that prevent any water or moisture from entering the conversation.

Q: What happens when a shipping container falls overboard?

A: Most containers sink quite rapidly to the ocean floor once they hit the water. But depending on their contents, they may stay afloat for days or even weeks before sliding beneath the surface. This process can take even longer for refrigerated containers on account of their buoyant insulation.
